School is not for be shy

The experience is something very useful in order to succeed in school. The experience that the people acquire during their school years is very wide, and it is related with the relationships between us and our friends, colleages, teachers, people working in school and parents. I think that one of the most important relationships that gives us experience and leaves a mark in our minds, is the one we have with our teachers and classmates/friends in the classroom. For some people, the classroom is a place where they can learn in a very dynamic and enriching way, interacting talking, asking and explaining all they want. For many other students, like me, to do aloud all the activities I mentioned, is also beneficial for an integral development, but at the same time is difficult to carry out because of the shyness and fear of what the others could think. In other words, talking and asking out loud when it is necessary in order to have our doubts solved and to be an active and participative person in classes is strengthening, but also could be overwhelming.

As soon as I entered the school, I noticed that in order to get good grades, it is needed to ask teachers when you have some doubts and to participate making some comments. It is also important to mention that since I can remember, I have been a person who likes to study and read, but I was very shy to say what I was thinking and to make some questions when I had not understood something. One day, when I was in secondary school, the Physics teacher made some questions and said that the first person to answer them wouldn’t have to do some exams. I knew immediately the answer, but in a very foolish way I did not say it; later, another person solve the questions, and I had to do a very difficult exam. Another day, now in my school faculty, my teacher of physics decided to make me do the final exam just because I did not dare to participate I class. I did not participate because I didn’t want to say silly things, but then I realized that even if a person says only silly things, he was happy with that and gave him/her good notes. Finally, as all the other students that solved the same exam, I failed and I had to retake the course.

Thanks to the experiences I have lived, as the ones I mentioned above (and some other ones), I learned that if a person is daring and he or she is not shy, has more possibilities to be successful in school and in the life. Now, despite it is still a little difficult for me, I am overcoming my problem, and the classes are more productive for me.

First aid in Mexico is not an important thing to know for most of people; in first world countries it is as important as to have a degrre, but here we think it is a formation only to have knowledge by doctors or nurses, but not it is a life saving knowledge.

When I was twenty, I was invited to a fifteenth birthday party;and when everyone was having supper, suddenly, in one of the tables, a man began to made a lot of noise and tapping on the table. At first I was not aware of what was happening, I thought he was giving a show due to his drunknees, but then when I saw him, I remembered the trainning my brother had given me, because I recognized the universal asphyxia, moments ago he was laughing while eating and now he was choking with a litle piece of bread.

My brother had told me many times that it was important to learn, first aid. But for a reason or another I did not want to go to a course or that kind of stuff so I told him to teach me; now, I can say, it is not important to know that, it is essential in everyone's education have at least a basic first aid course. Taking the most basic course can change the balance between a death and life situation.

I would not say I saved that man's life but at least I helped him a lot applying the airways' desobstruction manuver I learnt from my brother and in subsequent courses.
I have to say I had not any experience witha real life scenario before but I had good and solid theorical knowledges; Knowing first aid make me feel a little more confident to help poeple in everyday life.
Hello everyone, I am Iván but Irather being called Hicks that is my last name.
I study Geophysics Engineering, it has been hard but I really love my major.
I also love, big time, learning and speaking other languages; I just find it so relaxing and useful that I really enjoy being in a language class. I like reading, right now I am reading "La Divina Comedia" it is kind of difficult because of the way Dante did the poetry and (for me) is difficult because I do not read a lot of poetry. I also read "The Hunger Games" ,on the contrary, is an easy reading and ,as far as I have read, a well written story; also a little bit of Thermodynamics, not only for my major, but also because I think knowing and undestandig all the phenomenons that surround us is important.
I like dancing and I enjoy pretty much playing videogames. I love being with my girl Lucy and I really, but really, love swimming and practising judo.
I also work, it is tiring because of the amount of hours, but I really like my job, I am a swimmer trainer and lifeguard.
Well, that's a part of me people, I'm very thrilled and happy of being in the class.
By the way Sara, I enjoy pretty much your musical selection in the writing time.

Kittens: an example of a happy ending due to experience

My sister used to pick up abandoned newborn kittens. Some people do not want them, so they throw them to the garbage expecting them to die. The first group of kittens died within the first weeks, but with this painful experience, we were ready to take proper care of the next one.

Baby kittens, we discovered, need special care. For example, they can not eat solid food, they need milk, but not just any milk, they need a special one. If one does not give them the right kind of milk, at a warm temperature, and every two hours, they will surely get sick. Also, they need to sleep with something warm in their "nest"; a microwaved bottle of water in their box would do the job. Finally, they need to be licked (with a wet towel, for example) after each meal in order to stimulate their digestion and waste disposal. All these advices were unknown to us for the first group of kittens, but the second one grew up healthy and happy.

After the first heart-breaking, unsuccesful experience, we got knowledge about what to dor or not to do with newborn kittens. This expertise only comes with time, just  living and doing things again and again until you success. There may be failures, but they are esssential to learn.

I like to read all most any type of books, my favorite writer is Julio Verne. If I have free time I like to go to museums, specially if they are in  Historical Center. One of my favorites is the MUNAL.
I hope to have a good semester.

Hi, my name is Daniel. I'm studying psycology, currently i am at 3rd semester. I entered CELE by the colocation exam. I didnt know this was a writing course but think that is great. Well, I enjoy doing any kind of sport, specially soccer. I also enjoy watching sports and i am a huge fan of Toluca (soccer team) i know thats kind strange haha. I also fan of classic rock, specially i like Led Zeppelin i Believe they are, were, the greatest band ever. Well i think thats all. I hope to have a great course :)

Something about me

Hello everyone.

My name is Lucia, but I like being called Lucy. I am 25 years old.
I study Physics, which is a very time-consuming major; maybe this is why I sometimes hate it, but it is lovely because one learns a lot. I also hate it because many of my classmates and professors have huge egos.
I live in a nice appartment in Copilco with three engineers. We live in a very quiet neighborhood; in contrast, my roomates are not quiet at all!
Our classmate Ivan is my boyfriend. I am so in love with him, and of course, I'm happy that we can take this class together.

I love learning languages, therfore I'm willing to improve my English writing!
Hi everybody! I´m Sara, your teacher this semester. I have been teaching in CELE for 16 years and W 005 is my only group at CELE this semester. I also work as a full time teacher at Universidad Autónoma de la Ciudad de México campus San Lorenzo Tezonco. I teach reading comprehension there. I love my job as a teacher, whether at CELE or UACM. I have taught many of the Advanced courses, including Speaking, Listening, English Literature, Advanced Reading and Writing (No grammar, thanks).

I studied at UNAM's Philosophy School. My major is English Literature, so I love reading a lot. I´m reading now about a very important king in English History, Henry VIII. Last semester I taught English Literature here in CELE and  had an incredible time rereading a lot of interesting material, like the Legends of King Arthur, Shakespeare's Hamlet or some epic poems like Beowulf.

I also love dogs, I´m crazy about them. Some years ago I trained dogs for search and rescue. After the 1985´s eartquake, the UNAM created a canine unit to work on this and there was I, training my golden retriever. Though I love teaching a lot, I have never felt as happy and excited as I was when I was at the field doing my search job. I miss that because I don´t do it anymore.

So much for a walk down memory lane. I hope that we all enjoy sharing our thoughts and reading our classmates'.

Hi, everybody!

Hi!!

My name is Tania and I am a Master's degree student (particularly in Biochemical Sciences).
My major is QFB, and I really love it. That is the perfect major for me because Chemistry together with Biology focused on human health is my passion.
I also love to read. The books I prefer are about scientific divulgation, thrillers, fantastic tales, stories for young readers and those in which are mysteries to solve.
I like to dance and practice excercises/sports that include stretching or many aerobic movements.
Finally, I decided to take the writing course due to mainly two reasons: 1)  I think is one of the most important skills in order to say in a comfortable way "I know English". Because of that, I planned to take Writing, Speaking, Grammar and Phonetics or Listening. 2) For my studies it is highly necessary to write well, kind of quickly and embrace different kinds of communication.

Well, that's all for this introduction.

See you soon!

Hi everyone

My name is Carolina and im currently studying Graphic Design.

I love to draw ha, ha. And I decided to take this course first, because i would like to improve my writing skills. Second, because my schedule gave me the opportunity to take this curse (however i already had decided i wanted to take THIS course) and finally because I have always been interested in writing; reading is one of my other pleasures and I always find myself surprised about how the autors can express themselves so well and write so many pages about anything and still make you feel interested, their vocabulary, everything... i don´t know... haha, it seems very interesting to me.

I have only read one book in english, it´s called The Lovely Bones and other than that my experience in reading in english is kind of... little. I don´t really need this skill for my school right now, but i like comics, movies and I read reviews in some blogs and most of the time all that stuff its only available in english. On the other hand I like to read manga (japanese comics) and check forums and most of the vocabulary in those places its kind of  um.. casual? in the comics it depends of the translator (most of the time its a fansub), so I end up using words like dude and stuff haha.  I have been reading a lot of blogs lately and to some point i would like to start to write one myself or something and to get to know more people.
Plus it could help me to share some of my work :P

I would love to get more experience and knowlege (especially to express myself correctly while writing) that could help me in this class.

Well, until next time  :)

Hello :)

Hello!!

Well, first of all, this post is just for testing the system and for introducing myself. I'm Luis, a graduate student in the Faculty of Engineering, in the Signal Processing area (focused on image processing) so, for that, I also have studied in the Faculty of Philosophy and Literature (for better image perception's understanding). As college minor, I'm interested in languages, lately in my English improvement (being 'writing' one of my weak skills). And, well... if it is required any extra information then we have the comments area for asking/answering.

See you and have a great day!

Welcome to Advanced Writing! I hope you enjoy our semester together. As you already know, we are going to write, and write and write. Our blog will be the forum to share our ideas, opinions, interesting links, works and so much more! Let's start by knowing each other. Introduce yourself, your major, what you like (or don't like), your hobbies, etc. If you want to tell something about you and what you expect from this experience in CELE, do so. Add pictures if you like.
